Time:
April 2024
Shoot Type:
Full renovation shoot in 2 phases
Challenge:

The hotel’s updated interiors include a bold, dark green palette in the atrium—a nod to its original New Orleans-meets-Kentucky-Horse aesthetic. While visually striking, this presented a classic challenge for any photographer: how to faithfully capture a space with such low ambient light, deep tones, and complex contrast.

Solution:

I approached this by using layered exposures to hold detail in both the deep shadows and bright highlights. I deliberately composed shots into the darkness, keeping contrast under control, while using carefully balanced fill light to bring out the architectural details, textures, and furnishings. The goal was to stay true to the designer’s vision while making the spaces feel both inviting and authentic.

Photographer’s Note

I’ve got a soft spot for Lexington and always enjoy returning to this part of Kentucky. I’ve photographed this DoubleTree several times over the years, so it’s been rewarding to watch it evolve. The 2024 renovation has really elevated the space—respecting its roots while bringing it firmly into the now. I also made time for a quick visit to Frankfort and a distillery stop (when in Kentucky…).

Design-Led Renovation? Let’s Capture It Right

Moody tones and complex light don’t have to be difficult — they just need a thoughtful approach. I help hotels and designers translate bold interiors into images that feel true, inviting, and brand-ready.
